HISTORY OF CZERW'S:
Jan Czerw, our grandfather, immigrated from Mislsi, Poland. He was
employed as butcher.
Jan would make kielbasa for his family and friends in the basement of his home. Word quickly spread
that Jan was making the kielbasa and demand grew for his product. Jan decided to open his business.
In 1938, Jan opened
Philadelphia Provisions. He saved money by converting a horse stable into a shop. Jan built the brick oven smoke houses himself.
Czerw's Kielbasa still stands in that original spot, using the same brick ovens built almost 70 years ago.
Jan passed
the store to his two sons: Thaddeus (known to everyone as Ted; our father), and Konstant. Konstant retired and handed sole
operation of the business to Ted.
On Ted's retirement and eventual passing away, ownership of the business was passed
on to his sons: Dennis and Jeffrey, and John.
Since the start of the business, it has always been family operated and
oriented. Our aunt worked for both our grandfather and father, in the retail store. At young ages, we were all involved in
the business in some way; such as carrying bags out for customers and cleaning out the smokehouses. Our mother still comes
in every day to "give a
hand". She continues to make golabki (stuffed cabbage) for the store, which always
sells out.
Czerw's still uses the same recipes for kielbasa that were created over 70 years ago by our grandfather. We
continue to smoke our products using only quality, real fruit woods; just as it was done in 1938.
Our goal is to provide delicious, quality homemade Polish foods.
We are the
manufacturers of the finest quality, old-fashioned Polish Kielbasy.
Tender pork butts are
used exclusively. And, our Smoked Kielbasy is smoked in old-fashioned bricks ovens using only seasoned, natural fruit
woods.
We guarantee all homemade products to be of the highest quality. Taste
is your assurance.
Our kielbasy contains no by-products, artificial color, fillers, or added
water; unlike other brands sold in the marketplace.
